The name Pendleton King has a park and has been considered as one of Augusta’s wonderful 60-plus acres of land located near Downtown Augusta and it offers beautiful, relaxing vistas. It is a huge and impressive space. John Pendleton King II was the grandson of one of Augusta’s first success stories. When he came to town in the 1800s, he achieved both political and commercial success. He became a lawyer as well as a judge and suddenly became one of the United States senators. He was one of the businessmen who helped develop the Georgia Railroad, King Mill, and its bank.
Young Pendleton grew to manhood, went overseas (like his father) to study at Oxford University, and gained some notice as a poet. While he was in Europe, the family’s old Southern home burned – workmen using blowtorches to soften paint were blamed.
But something bigger broke out, the Great War. The Chronicle reported Pendleton King was one of the first men from the South to be commissioned as an Army lieutenant. He served until the war’s end and his unit saw much of the action. EZ Augusta Junk Removal
King would receive a medal from the French and head back to Augusta. This must have been highly anticipated because in early 1919 The Chronicle would report almost every stop as he made his way home, certain to finally launch a career, rebuild the family estate, and maintain the prominence of the King name.
