It was in 1874 when Father Theodore Butler purchased a lot and a home in Augusta, Georgia for an amount of $10,000 to construct a building to be used as a church for the Catholic population as well as a school for children of all denominations. A simple Victorian structure has been served as a temporary facility of the church and since then until the church could begin on a much larger and more significant building for the group.
The first bricks that were laid for Sacred Heart Church in 1897 were opened with the first religious service on December 2, 1900. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building features towering twin spires, fifteen distinctive styles of ninety-four stained glass windows, a barreled vaulted ceiling, great brick woodworks, and intricately carved Italian marble altars. Unfortunately, due to its number of factors, the last mass in this church was held in July 1971. EZ Augusta Junk Removal
Rescue and Rebirth
All because of the generous commitment of the Peter S. Knox family, this facility was rescued from the sixteen years of vandalism, vacancy, and near destruction. After the extensive reconstructions, the building was reopened in 1987 as the Sacred Heart Cultural Center. This structure is now providing a unique venue for social and cultural events such as theatrical presentations, annual Garden Festival, choral concerts, art exhibitions and is also rented continuously throughout the celebration and civic functions. This old Rectory building and the Sacred Heart School building administered offices of local arts and other non-profit organizations including the Greater Augusta Arts Council, Augusta Symphony, Choral Society, Augusta Players, and the Red Cross.
